Our Organization

"Organized in 1964 the Decatur & Macon County Genealogical Society & Library is a non-profit, non-sectarian, educational society with the following purpose:

 

To encourage the science of genealogy, to help others gather genealogical information, to preserve the published material of historical and genealogical nature, all for educational purpose."

 

The Decatur Genealogical Society Library is located at 1255 West South Side Drive, Decatur, Illinois - with a mailing address of PO Box 1548, Decatur, IL 62525-1548. The library is staffed entirely by volunteers and is open on  Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10 AM to 4 PM. (217) 429-0135 The library collection, valued at over $250,000.00 is one of the largest genealogical libraries in downstate Illinois.

 

A small donation is asked of non-members. Individual, libraries or society dues are $20.00 - including the quarterly and the newsletter. $30.00 for a family membership.

If you are coming from a distance, please check the calendar or the answering machine for any scheduled closings.
In case of inclement weather, please call (that day) before you come.

 

NEWSLETTER: "Central Illinois News" a bi-monthly newsletter giving details of the monthly meeting (program, speaker & location), area conference news, genealogical tidbits, new acquisitions to library holdings, classes, workdays and information on various other DGS projects.

QUARTERLY: "Central Illinois Genealogical Quarterly" published by DGS contains ca. 40 pages.
